Learning Portfolio

Synopsis and Reflection

As you all know, I am Zachary Quarles, and I'm here to go over in a narrative format, what I learned and accomplished this semester. What I have learned in this class goes beyond the basic curriculum and skills we were taught. This class taught me to be more self dependent with my studies. That I can use the resources given to us on the internet, and teach myself through youtube, through w3 schools, and all the trainings we have received for the various languages. I learned that you have to be hungry for knowledge, and have to want to gain it, to use it. For me, one of the coolest parts of this class was being able to learn about the online scripting languages, and Database Query Language (mySQL) and beig able to apply it and recognize it while at my job here at UH. Since I work as a student worker with Admissions IT here at UH, I was able to recognize now what it meant when my superior Anthony Stott, "created" a query to pull various data of incoming students from our databases. I was able to sit in with him and watch him create a query from mySQL statements, which for me brought the subject, along with everything I learned in 2336 full circle.

Going back to learning styles, I am definitely a hands on learner. I need something tangible, something I can wrap my head around and work with, in order to truly understand a concept. Thats what made these learning modules in this class so great. In w3schols and Codecademy, I was able to manipulate code segments, and see how the outputs would change, as I went along changning various fragments of the code. This helped raise my level of understanding, as I wasn't just sitting down, memorizing conceptual knowledge from a textbook. I really got to get hands on with the code and see what it could do, and how it benefited people in everyday life.

In a more literal sense, I learned invaluable techniques and skills in this course that I will use during my career, within Computer Information Systems. Languages and skills I learned consist of:

The list goes on, continuing with all of the various applications these scripting languages can be used for. Below you will find the 4 links, to my most accomplished activities in each of the 4 modules, which were once again: HTML and CSS, PHP, mySQL, and JavaScript. Inside each activity will be an explanation of how the assignment worked, what I learned from it, as well as information and some other additional resources that I benefited from in that particular module.
